Yule Spell - Day 3 Very Delayed!!

Thanks to a combination of terrible weather, lack of internet and plunging into a very busy 2011, to my huge disappointment I didn't get to post my final installment of the yule spell! So just because I was determined to do it at some point, here it is:

God and Goddess
Perfect in balance
I bid you to bless
My life with your talents

Your wisdom and serenity
The strength in your identity
I seek to imitate
With total humility

I am content where I am
And for now I shall stay
To suspend growth for now
And to embrace today

It seems that I suspended growth for a little too long though! Hopefully will get back to more blogging now so catch you later!

Blessings to you. xx

Yule Preparations - Day 2

In my last post, I mentioned that I was going to represent the God and Goddess in my Yule celebrations. Now, I am a solitary witch and so do not subscribe to a particular Wiccan tradition - if you do then you are likely to already have close associations with particular deities and the associated names. But I enjoy the ecclectic nature of being solitary in this instance, that I can choose what I feel most drawn to and what I feel would most suit my spell or ritual. As long as I give thanks and am humble, I see all is well with this.

For this particular Yule, I am choosing the Triple Goddess and the horned God.

To represent the Triple Goddess I am going to use an altar cloth with her/their symbol on it. I am also going to use a display that features something else I talked of yesterday - the crystal ball. This will placed at the centre as it's to represent the full moon, the mother - full and abundant. On either side, to represent maiden and crone, I will have an acorn and an owl. Potential and vitality balanced by wisdom and a psychic eye.

Now for the horned God - I am going to use the guise of the Holly King for this. Plenty around and this represents perfectly a rich, deepness in character (in the dark green) and the scary edge (in the prickles)! Holly is something that I'm so happy to use in my Yule rituals and spells as not only does it have its Pagan traditions but it's one of the many things that remains with us today and so brings with it all the happy memories of childhood memories.

Now need to get cracking on putting some structure together for al these ideas!

Yule Preparations - Day 1

It's funny that at this time of year, Yule represents the earth going to sleep or dying before its rebirth. And yet we are all running around like crazy trying to get everything done!

That said, it's time to start thinking about Yule traditions and making plans for my festive celebrations. In terms of renewal, I'm actually quite happy with the way that most of the important aspects of my life are going at the moment so I'm going to aim for stability - to keep up the good work and keep everything ticking over so that I am then ready for another spurt of enthusiasm and progress come Ostara. It's been a very chaotic time and so I am happy to see some calm and balance come in, it will be grounding for me.

I'm happy to throw in a bit of giving thanks for the opportunities I've had lately though - I don't plan to make it too sensible a party!

Anyhoo, here are some of my ideas so far:
  • Red and green candles, for the sake of being tradionalist. And lots of them too being a celebration of light.
  • Plenty of holly and mistletoe, for the same traditionalist reasons as above!
  • Almonds, cloves and cinnamon
  • Snow quartz
  • Thyme - a great herb for this time of year.
  • Last year I went for divination with a tarot reading. Plan to fit in crystal ball work this year.
  • Symbolism for the God and Goddess, for which I have some ideas already but will let you know the details a bit nearer the time.
Can't wait for the next wave of ideas!

Free Spell: A little love spell

It's been a while since I included a love spell - don't know why as who doesn't like a bit of romance in their life! So I've got a very simple little spell to try. It can be for trying to encourage the spark between you and an interest or to bring back and little frisson to an established relationship. Both work well if you just want a bit of passion back in your life.

You will need:
A white candle
The Lovers card from a tarot deck
White paper
A red pencil, crayon or pen

Place the lovers card in front of you, the unlit candle just behind it. Directing your thoughts to the tarot card say:

You represent the beauty of love The feelings I wish to enjoy

(Light the candle)
So I light up your power Illuminate the wonder Then cast it on me and my love

I write my intentions My promise to him/her Please carry my thoughts to the wisdom above

Now write something personal and expressive about the feelings you have for this person on the white paper in the red pencil. Don't make it too much of a wish list though, it's not the time to lay out what you want to happen. Just put down your honest feelings and let the energies do the rest :)

When you are finished, fold the Lovers card up in the paper you have written your intention on and leave it (safely!) in the light of your burning candle.

Free Spell: The Disappointment Spell

Unfortunately I have had a bit of a disappointment lately. I had pinned my hopes on something only to find that it wasn't quite what I imagined. It's no biggie ultimately but sometimes it's really hard to change the way you view something, to accept reality and move on. Disappointment leaves a gap in your feelings somehow, it leaves you not knowing what to aim for or cling to or even believe in. The hard part is trying to find something to fill that gap.

Needless to say, I've spent this afternoon working through a few spells to help me with this! Thought you might like a few ideas if you have been through something similar recently.

Disappointment Spell Number 1
You will need:
A candle (any colour is fine)
Incense
Water
Bread (preferably quite wholesome and fresh)

These are to represent sustenance and the feeling of being full and satisfied in your life.

I have light to help me see (light your candle)
I have air to help me breath (light the incense)
I have water to refresh and carry me (lightly touch the water or even sip it)
I have bread to nourish and fulfill (taste the bread)

The basis of life for me is observed
I'm whole and complete

Hope follows

Disappointment Spell 2
The next spell I worked on is very simple and one that I can repeat whenever that sinking feeling washes over me. Think of it as a top up!

I am using a tumblestone of clear quartz as this is such great neutraliser. It's important to realise when disappointed that very often, you haven't lost anything, you just feel like you have. Your situation is much the same as it was and this is why I like clear quartz - it resets the energies.

Just keep the gemstone of your choice with you and if you feel a bit low, hold it in your hand and try the following:

My feelings are infinite
My spirit moves on

Blessings and hugs and I hope good luck finds you! xx

Cold Spell?

I have a terrible cold at the moment and I'm really wishing there were a spell to make it go away! Mind you isn't there something about witches sneezing 3 times in a row? Or is that cats??

Samhain/Halloween Spell - complete

Following on from yesterday, I have now put together the spell that I will use this evening and have now set up the altar and set aside some quiet time. If you want to know how I have gone about the arrangements of tools and ingredients, it's all in yesterday's post!

Here is the spell I will be working with:

At Samhain I'm surrounded by the echoes of the past
They chime with who I am now
The strengths and lessons I bid will outlast
The mistakes, the fears to which I'll no longer kowtow

I will all always remember, I will never forget
The kindness given to me
But to the hurt and the bad times, I owe no debt
So from its hold, I see that I'm free

I move on without burden
Through the dark days ahead
But am lightened and spurred on
For the new path I'll tread!

As mentioned yesterday, I will continue to reflect and meditate in the evenings over the next 5 days so that I do not rush such an important transition in terms of my feelings and outlook.

Hope you have a great Samhain - blessings and hugs!!

Samhain/Halloween Spell - Everything but the spell

Ok, I've been working on my Samhain/Halloween spell this morning and trying to bring all of my ideas together. All that's needed is the final details on my ritual and I shall be ready for tomorrow!

I have tried to make the focus more on the smoke than the fire because of my theme of the 'ghosts' of the past and trying to move beyond them. I have selected:

Bay leaves for inspiration - this is because I feel it's important to see your way forward rather than just try to leave the past behind, leaving a complete blank where the future should be!

Boldo leaf for spiritual cleansing - an obvious one. It's about enabling yourself to let go without fears of the gaps that it leaves. It helps you to welcome the feeling of a fresh start.

Apple incense - apples have associations with Halloween obviously, but it's also about tapping into the lovely, fresh energy that apples can bring. The smell of the above herbs can be quite pungent and apple incense can cut through this nicely as it's quite sweet.

Orange and black candles - this is a traditional colour combo for candles and Samhain and I see no reason to move away from it!

Symbols - I have chosen some very personal symbols to represent the various memories and feelings that I intend to learn from, keep, or let go of. These will be placed on my altar for 5 days so that I can spend some time every day sitting on front of them and lighting candles for 5 minutes to reflect and meditate*. I will place them in the centre with my herbs and incense placed around them to both protect and fence them in. Again, it's about focus.

Of course, Samhain is very much a time of hope and strength so that we can make it through the harsh winter months. For most of us these days, this is more of an emotional matter than a physical one. But nevertheless, it's always important to take a little time at these important Sabbats to give thanks for the assistance you get in making it through and being able to enjoy the good times!

Blessings
Fran xx

*some people do not like the idea of not using spell candles in one go but I don't feel it is totally a bad thing. Just make sure that you don't blow the candle out, always use a snuffer so that you hold all of the energies that you've been working with inside.

Samhain/Halloween Spell - On second thoughts!

Ok, I have been trying to think of ways to bring all of my Samhain spell ideas together and most of this has been while driving in the car - I've done a lot of this lately! It actually seems to help me think because of the movement and change of scenery. Try it!

But I've been thinking through my plans to try to work at leaving the past behind but in a way that doesn't merely ignore the issues that I need to confront. It's all about separating out the good and the bad, sifting through the memories that I have and being totally honest with myself about what is beneficial to my life and what has turned to insecurities.

So I have been trying to think of some symbols for these areas that I want to focus on. What can represent the positives and the strengths that I want to remember and hang on to, and what can similarly be used to symbolise the areas that don't serve me well and need to go. The reason that I feel this is important is because it makes you literally sit and look at what you need to do - avoidance isn't possible.

In this sense, my altar is going to look like a mini shrine! So I will be having to work with the types of symbols that I select and then explore ways to work with the right tools and ingredients or herbs to maximise the potential.

I will be getting the bulk of my work done tomorrow morning - so next post follows quickly behind this one :)

Blessings xx

Samhain/Halloween: First thoughts

I mentioned the other day that I am going to focus on moving on from the negative aspects of the past for my Samhain/Halloween ritual - chasing the ghosts of the past away in other words! I've been giving some thought to some of the herbs that I want to use and am opting for:

Bay leaves - for inspiration
Boldo Leaf - for spiritual cleansing

Both of these burn really well and I like the visual associations between the smoke (and its whispy qualities) and the spirits of the past that I am trying to banish from my life. It also blends in well with the use of fire which I would like to make quite central to my spell too as I like the power of both vibrant light and creation and potential destruction. It brings about just the right balance.

My next thoughts are going to be around something to drive me forwards. It's easier to move on from negative aspects of the past when you have something to look forward to!

Don't forget to let me know if you are working on any ideas of your own!

Samhain/Halloween 2010!!

Ok, I think we all know that Samhain/Halloween is a time of renewal and new beginnings. It's a wonderful time to garner these energies and make real plans for real changes in your life. But I have decided that I'm going to place a slightly different focus on my Samhain this year.

For it is also a time when the division between the two worlds of the living and the dead are weakest, when the departed are said to walk alongside us and we in turn, respect the life that they once had and their place amongst us. This is going to, in part, be the inspiration for my focus this year - the ghosts of the past and working on being able to move on wherever necessary!

Leaving the past behind is not always the sensible decision, of course. By ignoring it you often forget or fail to learn very important decisions. But repeating patterns, failing to let go of regrets and not spending enough time looking at the future though, is equally dangerous and so this is what I am going to concentrate on this year.

So, hope you join me over the next few weeks as I unfold my intentions and write my Samhain spells!

The autumnal equinox - Mabon

Firstly, to all those celebrating today - Happy Mabon! If you're celebrating over the weekend, luck you as I'll be working :(

As I mentioned yesterday, this is a really busy time for me and I've not got much time to dedicate to honouring Mabon this evening. But I have got a few plans for when I get back later and so thought I'd share them with you. I am only planning on spending 10 minutes so if you're short on time too, this should suit you.

Mabon is a sun sabbat and so I like to feature some orange and gold. If you've been following my blog for a while then you will know that I have a gold, sun mirror that I use a lot so that's coming out this evening! I also have a very sturdy, patterned orange candle that I've been saving for the occasion. It's also a time of giving thanks so usually I like to make some apple and raisin biscuits (that's cookies to those of you in the US!) to give to friends. Whether or not they consider it much of a gift considering my cooking skills is another matter! But I don't have the time today so I will fall back on my usual fail-safe of making a donation to a charity box. It's all about cultivating energies of giving.

For me, Mabon is also a time of balance. We are letting go of the summer and looking towards the onset of winter and in the meantime there's a bit of everything going on. Stood between the two, we need to be flexible and fluid in our thinking. If we get some crisp, sunny days we smile and enjoy it. When the rain and biting cold comes, we wrap up warm and look forward to snuggling up with a cup of hot chocolate later! You can feel pulled in different directions with the weather but I actually see it as being a beautiful time of year that is changeable and vibrant.

I've spent some time thinking over the last week of all the things I need to let go of, all the things that I've been putting time and energy into but aren't doing me any good. And I've got lots of ideas for new projects and things I've always wanted to try. This evening, I will light my candle (my mirror positioned so I can see the flame reflected and increase the light) and write down these ideas. When I'm finished, I will blow out the candle to represent us going into the dark months.

Have a great evening yourself! Blessings to you all and your loved ones :)

Mabon and being trapped on holiday!

Hello! Just a really quick post from me today. I've been having a crazy busy time of it and to add to the pressures on my time, I got stuck on holiday too. It's a tough life, eh? I promise you I didn't cast any spells to make that happen!

Anyway, because of it I have not had the time to put anything together for Mabon but I may well have a chance to post something quickly tomorrow.

Blessings as ever! xx

Free Spell: And the rain rain rain came down down down!

I'm getting a little tired of the incessant rain at the moment as it's nigh on impossible to pop out anywhere and not take the car - and I'm a MASSIVE fan of walking :)

However, I love using the energies of rain in spells because I like the cleansing feel that it has. It's a good time to try to shed feelings that you are hanging onto or to aim for a fresh start. I have quite a few rain spells but here's a general one that you can either use to bring about some new beginnings or for if you want to adapt it.

The rain comes to cleanse
And bring vigor to life
A time for amends
Reverse all my strife

I can transform and grow
In a direction that's new
Like water I'll flow
And restrictions I pass through

Begone old emotions
That do me no good
Begone foolish notions
Let me be what I should!

The best time and place for this spell is sat in front of a window looking out at the rain or even, if you can, sat under a shelter outside. Have a listen to that wonderful sound of the constant patter of the raindrops on the window or roof - it'll really get you in the right mood!

Seraphimia: The infamous Crowley still stirring up trouble

Seraphimia: The infamous Crowley still stirring up trouble: "Image via WikipediaI've been rather absent from this blog recently and not simply because of my 101 project keeping me occupied, I've also ..."

Above is a thought provoking blog post from Seraphimia that I wanted to share. It raises some great questions about the nature of faith, beliefs and religion in general. I felt a little sad reading it as I thought of all the leaders and figure heads of religion who are drawn to the power (she talks of Aleister Crowley in particular), leaving all the goodness and dignity to the 'followers'. I hope Seraphimia is strengthened by her time of reflection :)

Free Spell: Birthday spell

A birthday spell can be a lovely treat to send to someone that you love and care about on their special day. You don't even need to share with them that you've done it - but more people are charmed than not by a little wish sent their way.

I find the best way to make a birthday spell 'sparkle' a bit is to make it as personal as possible. So if you know that the birthday girl or boy wants to travel this year, that they want to find love, that they need a bit of luck in a particular area, then include this for them.

Otherwise, I work on a basic spell I did for my best friend a few years ago. Feel free to adapt!

A birthday wish that's special to you
Is being sent this day
The turn of the year, the seasons it brings
May it assist you to find your own way

A year that will count
A year that will change
A year that will bloom
A year that will conquer
Be blessed and welcome all you deserve!

Free Spell: Shaking off the blahs!

Today has been one of those days where you feel a bit low and in need of a bit of comforting. No particular reason, I've just been finding it hard to shake off a feeling of the blahs! So I have done a little spell this afternoon to help bring a little joy and positivity back into my soul. It doesn't take much but has lifted my spirits and therefore done the job :)

I find that I gravitate towards nature when I'm not feeling quite like myself. The beauty and calm helps me to reconnect and sharpens my perspective when it comes to what's important in my life. So I took myself off to a local country park and after a short stroll, chose a quiet and pretty spot to sit down on the grass. (And yes, I did get a bit of a damp backside but that's nature for you!) These are the words that have meaning to me, I say them to myself while I close my eyes:

Gloom begone
You cover my spirit
It's to nature I belong
And the lifeforce within it

I am creativity, I am peace
I am balance and motion
And so as dark turns to light
So too will this emotion

(Take a deep breath in)
I  am now released and can move on

Witchcraft: Invoking the element of fire

This is a post for Chet who very kindly commented on the blog last week and said how she'd like to invoke the universal elements and, after speaking to her on Twitter, she expressed a particular interest in fire. I'm not surprised - I think it's the one we all feel drawn to!

For me, the fire element can be so many disparate things. It's comforting when it's an open fire, it's relaxing when it's a candle flame and yet it's terrifying and destructive when it's raging and out of control. It is important, I feel, to understand fire in all its complexity so that you can get to a point where you can recognise it (and are not surprised!) when invoking its energies in all its forms. The reason for this is that calling upon the fire element (or in fact any element or energy) isn't about summoning it and expecting it to work away in the background for you! It's about feeling it, merging energies and being totally aware of its presence as you would an old friend or work partner.

So the first point I would like to share with you is to try to find common ground with the fire element. Think about the characteristics of fire - the passion, the ferocity, the intense light that becomes softer towards the outside. Think of its playful side, the way flames dance and crackle. Think of its focus and determination as it burns through materials and how it can clear away and make way for the new. Spend some time thinking about your own personality as you'll be much more efficient at working with fire when you can see it as a like-minded soul.

I initially found it very helpful to put candles out for a week or so, taking the time to absorb the movements and feel of the flame and heat. It's about trying to see fire in a new light and to become totally comfortable in its presence. Pay particular attention to any feelings you get. These will likely be your psychic connection to fire starting to open up and one that you will feel again. The more familiar you become, the easier it will be to get it to work with you.

Don't try to focus merely on the power aspect of the fire element - this will be viewed as self serving, and remember how fire can burn! You should be aiming to show respect and humility and offer an invitation for fire to come assist you. Remember that you have no right to fire's assistance. This can be done by leaving a gift, either in the shape of a token of your appreciation (anything from a crystal to honey is acceptable) or in sending a promise to the universe that you will do a good deed for someone else when you can. Just make sure you do!

Another 'don't' point - but don't see fire as something that's exclusively magickal. It's real in the physical sense too and its energies are real. You may be using other senses to tune into its character and to feel its presence around you and it can distract you and make you focus on thes aspects alone. Keep taking a step back and looking at the fire element in its entirety.

Fire is also associated with pointing south. You don't necessarily have to face south when casting a fire spell but you may want to leave a small token at a south facing point to you when you are set to cast a spell. Placing a lit candle is good.

My last point for you to consider is that the creatures of fire are the legendary salamanders. These are not quite the same as the lizards but the associations are helpful. Think of the quick movements, the tremendous survival skills and the slightly fearful respect we generally treat them with! If it helps you to focus on something that feels more solid and real, then by all means do so.

Right, so what does this all mean in practise? Here's what I recommend you do:

  • Spend a week lighting a candle or candles in the evening and watch them in a medititive state. Write notes of the feelings and thoughts that come to you and look for patterns.
  • Over this time, select a simple spell. Make it something that you will be able to repeat a few times over. Something like helping you get past stress or building confidence. I pick these because they are spells that don't suffer from keeping the energies topped up! You do, in general, need to be careful of repeating spells over and over.
  • Set up a basic altar or a space where you want to work from. Candles are of course a must but also decorate with symbols that you feel will conjure the feelings and associations you have been working on (I've got some sun representations that I'm really attached to). If you have written a statement of intent for your spell, make sure you've got a cauldron or fire-proof bowl to burn it into safely. If you are burning herbs, same applies.
  • Cast your spell and pay attention to the feelings you experience. If it feels a bit flat, make a note of this and tweak your spell to include more fire qualities at the right moments. If you've experienced fire as vibrant and want this for your spell, then think of words that capture this - 'crackle'', sparkle', 'zest'. Dance and sing if you want to! Same goes for if you want it to be soothing etc. Always connect.
  • Repeat the spell a few times to see if you experience changes in the way it feels. Also, remember that witchcraft is a craft, it takes practise.
  • Don't forget to thank fire for its help. It's more likely to want to come back and help you again if you do :)
Hope this helps. This is by no means the exhaustive and definitive list of what it takes to invoke the fire element. It is a personal experience and journey. Therefore everyone has a different approach. So if you have any other questions or want to ask about a particular point that I've raised, please do leave me a comment!

Free Spell - Lammas/Lugnasadh

Ok, August the 1st is nearly here and I haven't had much time to prepare anything at all. But it doesn't mean that I don't intend to have a great time on Sunday! Here are some ideas for you if you are wanting to enjoy the last of the warm witch's sabbats :)

  • This is a time for bread and baking, so if you are so inclined and talented, now is the time to start planning your feeding festivities! I know some people like to prepare and freeze the dough but I'm not really an expert is this field so you wouldn't want to take advice from me on this!
  • Continuing with the food theme, the obvious option is to bring in summer fruits. Berries are a favourite of mine and bring a lot of colour to your home or altar too. If you can keep your hands off them for that long ;)
  • It's still summery and so the colours need to be orange, yellows and golds. But there are some greens coming in too. You may want to decorate your altar with citrine, green aventurine, tiger's eye and carnelian.
  • Decorate with flowers too. Sunflowers are often used but anything that you feel drawn to and sums up your mood is good.
  • If you are able to, also spend the day and or evening with some really good company. Because this is the last of the summer sabbats, I always feel it important to make the most of that happy, relaxed atmosphere and good friends always bring that with them.
As for the spell, I'm not going to do anything too complicated because I will not have the time to prepare. But Lammas/Lugnasadh is a time of abundance and gratitude so - these being qualities I can really appreciate! - I will be turning to an adaptation from an older spell of mine. This helps you to value what you have in your life and to hang on to the feelings and the benfits for as long as possible, despite going into the winter months soon.

I recommend you doing this after you have eaten and are at a comfortable body temperature. You shouldn't really try this with a feeling of need as it would not be fitting to the festival spirit.

All you will need, other than your chosen decorations, are some coins or some kind of harvest (such as your fruits). Place them in front of you or at the centre of your altar.

I receive this abundance
That blesses my day
This gift will enhance
And for more will make way

So the season'll move forward
The year will turn round
But this bounty stays with me
It's strength I have found!

If you have any plans for your own Lammas celebrations by the way, I'd love to hear from you! Have a good one :)

Free Spell - Rosemary and self esteem

When you've been busier than a busy thing, there's only one thing you can do - get busy! Alas, this has taken me away from my beloved blog lately but I'm still trying to think of ideas - guides to spells for beginners, Lammas etc.

So while I've got 5 minutes, I wanted to quickly post a quick free spell while I'm here! I have been working with someone who can be a little draining on other's energies, particularly by being unnecessarily critical. While I don't really take on board what she says, because I am hearing a lot of these comments, it can be quite wearing and the repetitiveness of them may put my self esteem in danger of being knocked.

So I have been carrying an home-made pouch of rosemary with me to ward off any potential harm. I love rosemary for protection. I must warn you that you only need a small amount though, and I've been keeping mine tucked away in my bag or drawer. You don't really want people thinking you smell of strange herbs!

You can wrap some dried rosemary in just about anything (tights/pantyhose/stockings will do!) and then give it a little blessing:

My soul is secure
My strengths are preserved
The real me will endure
I will receive what's deserved

Pocket your pouch and keep it with you or around when needed for the rest of the day. If you need it again the next, or another day, then make sure you make a fresh pouch up. Burn the existing rosemary or scatter it outside. I like to say:

Today's woes BEGONE!

Portrayals of witchcraft and girl power!

This article on witchcraft in films seems to have upset a few of the commenters, but I must admit, I didn't find anything to be too angry about. It wasn't very factual but it is more of a film review after all! Those who care to know the facts about witchcraft and spells will, I'm sure, go elsewhere for their info. Why, this blog itself may help lol!

But I do happen to agree with the idea that witchcraft has increased in its appeal due to a burgeoning sense of power and respect both for and within women themselves. The power, traditionally speaking, that women seek is for fairness, justice, to help others and to fight back oppression. It's not lust for destruction, it's for creation and happiness. So I can see why witchcraft helps cinema to portray this side of women.

Of course, the spells and magick element are ridiculous. But I actually don't see the harm it it for the most part. I enjoy the excitement that a little fantasy brings and because it's of personal interest to me, I enjoy indulging in their version of what I might secretly like to do myself! I'm talking nice things only of course, I have no secret desires to turn anyone into a frog ;)

Free Spells - Sun Spell

I don't know what the weather is like where you are (stating the obvious somewhat there!) but here it's been absolutely glorious :) And I am most certainly solar powered, the sun gives me energy and enthusiasm like nothing else. So this is not a spell to bring out the sun, but more about using its powerful vibrations and energies to stoke up your own potency.

You will need:

A sun representation (I have a mirror which I just love)
Red, yellow or orange candles. Or all 3 if you fancy.

O, sun how you radiate such power and such calm
Your warmth and light to all life is a balm
As you glow and shine, I seek to develop
Your qualities of strength and giving I'll envelop

I breath in your warmth (deep breath)
And let doubts go (breath out)
We are as one

I forgot my video of the Museum of Witchcraft!!

It's a bit quiet but I took this little video because I just liked the atmosphere of this room. I wasn't the only one who stood there for about 5 minutes! If only there were sweet, little old wise women in every village still today :)

Museum of Witchcraft, Boscastle, Cornwall

In the day, on Litha, I have to admit to being beside myself with excitement at planning to visit the Museum of Witchcraft at Boscastle. And it in no way disappointed. They are friendly, dedicated, the Museum itself strikes the right balance between creating a fun, mystical atmosphere and genuinely informing visitors. There is even a space for peaceful prayers (representing Danu). If you get the chance - GO!!

So, to whet your appetite, here are some of the pictures I took. Don't strain your eyes too much though, understandably, flash photography wasn't allowed. So I just had to do my best :)

The entrance

You can't really see this too clearly, but it's a wishing well. With plenty of support in the shape of many witches to help your wishes come true!

This was a lovely, calm and serene area which was playing some Pagan music. Seemed to lose track of time in this room.

There was a special section on the significance of the hare to many witches of times gone by.

Book of Shadows

...and in case you needed any more persuading, here are the views from behind the museum, and the area itself is simply stunning!

Again, this was such a treat on a special day for me. It was both really exciting to see so much information I already knew and totally connected with. Similarly, I doubt there is anyone who couldn't learn a thing or two! I could have spent hours in the areas for worship :)

Litha celebrations in Cornwall

I'm going to write up about my Litha trip to Cornwall, starting with the Museum of Witchcraft next, and it will explain why I have a little Boscastle incense holder!

But here are some pictures of my make-shift 'altar' for the evening.

Orange and red candles

Candles, incense and (because I was away from home and somewhere new) a smudging stick.

My little witchy friend from Boscastle (home of the Museum of Witchcraft!)

As you can see, it doesn't take much to have a few moments to yourself to celebrate the Sabbatts. And the candles and incense perked up the room no end!

Happy belated midsummer!

Hello,

Not had much chance to get online for litha but just to say that midsummer in Cornwall so far has been brilliant and will be able to put some pictures up very soon! And now I'm off to go and research Cornish piskies! I will definitely be recommending the lovely Museum of Witchcraft in Boscastle.

Litha/Midsummer fairies! 10 fairy facts

I have had SO little time to work on my Litha plans and spells - really hoping to get as much on the blog before I head off to Cornwall for the midsummer celebrations though! I shall try and get some pictures of my 'essential kit' before I go too :)

Seeing as one of the sweetest elements of Litha, or midsummer, is fairies (and I adore fairies!) I wanted to get down some fairy facts. There are few symbols of magick that I find to encapsulate the fun and light energies that I want to be able to draw into my life. And everyone likes a bit of mischief every now and then too ;)

  1. Different spellings of fairy are: faerie, faery. Different names are: fae, sprite, fair folk.
  2. Midsummer is the time when fairy magick is at its strongest and they come in great numbers to frolic, dance and create a bit of cheeky chaos wherever they go.
  3. Fairies love the summer flowers in full bloom but ferns are particularly sacred to them.
  4. Fairies apparently won't go near iron according to folklore!
  5. Not all fairy meddling was considered harmless and they were associated with changelings - substituting human babies with fairy children.
  6. Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream plays with the notion of fairies and spirits having extra powers to influence the lives of the humans - in this case, those who inadvertently fall into their path.
  7. Fairies prefer woodland.
  8. One of the most famous fairy stories sadly isn't true - the Cottingley Fairies. Two cousins faked photos of fairies in the bottom of the garden and their photographs were written about by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle no less.
  9. Fairies reputedly play tricks with gold. If one gives you a piece of gold, make sure it doesn't turn to bark or moss afterwards ;)
  10. Ever wondered what your fairy name is? Try the fairy name generator! Mine is below!
Your fairy is called Water Reedweb
She is a panpipe player and enchantment singer.
She lives near bubbling brooks where Lords and Ladies and Cuckoo's Pint grow.
She is only seen in the mist of an early morning.
She wears deep blue dresses. She has gentle green butterfly wings.

10 suggestions on how to celebrate Wicca festivals/Witch's Sabbatts if you're restricted

I mentioned before that I will be away from home for the Litha festival and that this leaves me with a need to be more flexible when it comes to arranging any spells or rituals. I was thinking that it's not just about being away from home though. There are people who's lifestyles don't really allow for full on celebrations - it could be due to time restrictions, lack of space or even because others in the household don't approve of their beliefs. So here is a list of 10 suggestions for if you find you can't go the whole hog!

1) One of the easiest ways to quietly celebrate is to wear colours associated with the festival on the day. So for Litha, dig out your red, orange, yellow and green clothes!
2) Make a small gesture while you are out. It can mean sitting quietly for 10 minutes in the sun and appreciating the glory of its heat. Or it could be an act of giving to show your humble thanks - flowers for a friend, putting some money in a charity box.
3) Cook with traditional foods. So for Litha this will include honey, thyme or summer fruits.
4) Light a candle and aim to have some time for quiet contemplation in front of, or around, it. No one need know what you're thinking.
5) Break up rituals into smaller segments so that you fit in 5 minutes in the morning and say, 10 minutes later on in the evening.
6) Carry something with you all day, such as a Litha gemstone (anything yellow or green, tiger's eye and lapis lazuli), a pressed flower (or lavender), an amulet or a God or Goddess representation.
7) Generally have a bit of fun - especially for Litha! This is the time to connect with the fairies/faeries/fey and so a bit of mischievous giggling and laughter will conjure the right feel and tone.
8) A quick tarot reading can be very beneficial if you have cards with you. The energies are very often lively and open so even if you are not experienced you can get some great insight.
9) If you grew herbs such as mint or parsley at Ostara, make a small ritual out of cutting and using your successful yield. Yep, even I can grow mint!
10) Lastly, say a few words to yourself. They can be in the style of an incantation, something self-affirming that you intend to do over the next few months or something between you and the divine Gods and Goddesses. As long as it's meaningful to you, it will be altering the energies around you in a positive way and will make the difference.

Litha time!

Here's my first post on Litha (Midsummer) and I must say that I'm REALLY looking forward to it! It isn't a major Sabbatt but it's definitely one of the most pleasant of festivals by nature of the potential sun and warmth. So, I shall be starting a series on how to build your plans/write spells for the occasion.

One of the reasons that I'm extra excited though, is because I have a trip to Cornwall planned for Litha! In case you don't know, Cornwall is kind of Witchcraft central in terms of history and folklore and I'm definitely planning on going to the Museum of Witchcraft!

To the Cornish, Litha is known as Golowan and there are loads of planned activities and entertainment. There is a big emphasis on fire traditionally which, of course, ties in with the heat and strength of the sun.

So, seeing as I'm likely to be away from home and in a region that has a particular way of celebrating Litha, I'm hoping to develop my celebrations with these things in mind. But I will also be covering more general ideas so that you can base your own plans on what you feel applies to you.

And if you have any suggestions for me, particularly on Golowan, then please let me know!

Sending thoughts to someone who needs them

Sometimes spells don't need to be about big changes or even about yourself. This is a little spell I've just done to send some healing thoughts of love to someone special who's going through a hard time. I like to have a few simple words to say but it's more to do with the sentiments and the thoughts that you project. Take something - such as a crystal, a flower or even a photo of the person who needs your assistance and blessings - and when you send your thoughts to your friend, direct them at the object you've chose to represent them. Them place the object to one side but in a room where you will be spending a lot of time. Your caring energies will be constantly 'topping up' every time you see their representation and will be sent their way. Here are the words I used, feel free to choose your own:

I'm not there in person
But my heart's by your side
I pray things won't worsen
And you'll be back in your stride

If you have a moment, please spare a little thought to a very sweet person who needs a bit of a boost from the kind souls of this world. Thank you. xx

Another poll

You may have noticed that I've added another poll to see what readers would prefer I concentrate on next. So I wondered if there was anyone that wanted a beginners guide to spells at all? Or whether it would be better to concentrate on a wider variety of spells and witchcraft?

So, if you've got a moment, please tick a box and let me have your thoughts :)

Thank you

Free Full Moon Spell (Esbat)

It's that time again a - full moon is nearly upon us! I didn't think I was going to have to the time to do anything proper but turns out I will so needless to say, I'm going to share it with you :)

Firstly, I would just like to say that Esbat does not specifically mean a spell or ritual at the full moon as many people believe. It can coincide with the full moon by choice, but are not one and the same thing. For those in a coven, monthly meetings (outside of Sabbatts) are routinely held so it is convenient to hold them at the full moon to make use of the powerful energies at this time. Mostly, it's for light-hearted rituals and fun as the meaning of Esbat is actually 'frolicking'.

So with that cleared up, what can you do? There are a few ways to make use of the full moon for a spell. One way is to use it for a timeframe -if there is something you'd like to see happen for you over the next month, use the moon's energies (just make it realistic). It can be a great time to cast spells for change and transformation. Altered mind-states work well at this time as do spells centred around femininity.

Personally, I'm using it as a timeframe. I have a very important day coming up two days after the next full moon in June and have a lot to do to prepare myself in the meantime! There is a big element of chance to what I want to happen and so I need to really work on growing stronger, ascertaining what specifically needs to be done and - as ever with me - being organised enough to actually get it done.

I am decorating the altar purely in silver and white. So white candles, white ribbon, my ever present favourite Triple Moon chalice (to be filled with water), snow quartz crystals and dark musk incense. I will have a silk pouch too (pretty similar to this moon and stars one but my aunty made mine!) - and I have a special plan for this. I will be writing what I already know I need to do down on a bit of paper (separate piece for each task), placing them in a bowl and focusing the energies on them. As I accomplish each one throughout the month, I'm going to place the piece of paper in the pouch to signify its completion.

Full Moon Spell

To start with, connect with the full moon's energies. Say:

The rhythm of the earth
Is the rhythm of the moon
And is the rhythm of my life
Together, we are one

Using the incense, draw a widdershins (anti-clockwise) circle over the bowl of tasks 3 times.

Unfailing and timely
Is the moon on her journey
Her cycle replete
By example she guides me

In the brilliance of her light
Her gentleness and might
I am inspired by intention
And seek her attention

Place the chalice of water in front of you:

The element of water, your natural companion
My dreams and my life combine as one too

Hope you find this useful!

Free Spells - General Life-Changing Spells part 5 (Meditation)

Last part of my free spells in the area of general life changes. Today I will leave you with a way of opening up the flow of energies around you, to help you drift along in the direction you are meant to be heading in. If we’re stressed, we can get in the habit of fighting against the tide - we keep on doing it even when the current is taking us to safety. It’s fear that makes us keep thrashing away - and consequently it’s a very brave decision to let go.

Here is a free spell to help you lessen your grip and start coasting!

You’ll need a bowl full of water and something that will effortlessly float in it such as floating candles, flower petals etc. This will be placed just above your head as you lie on the floor (which incidentally is your crown chakra which opens up intuition and your connection to your body and soul as a whole). At your hands and feet, place an incense stick. Something like lavender or lotus is perfect but it’s more about  allowing the smoke to pass over and around you and represent the ebb and flow of life. Some relaxing music can also help you to shut out the outside world, particularly if you have a lot of noise to contend with.

Lie down and repeat the following two lines for as long as you feel you need to in order to let thoughts and expectations leave your mind.

I release my grip
And drift towards life

When you are feeling in a changed state of mind and are feeling more positive, then close with:

With divine spirits by my side
My doubts and fears, I cast aside
The flow and current will be my guide
And in its direction, I will abide

In particular, the next 2 to 3 weeks will be the time to go with intuition, listen to your inner voice and NEVER ignore it when it’s telling you something is the wrong choice for you.

Have courage.

Free Spells - General Life-Changing Spells part 4 (Bells)

Years ago, I shared a house with a Buddhist and was awoken every morning by the sound of her chanting and with either the chime of her bell or gong. It was a lovely way to start the day! Ever since then I've been very fond of the sound of bells ringing and use them quite a lot in spells in order to bring about change and/or a sense of calm. The very sound seems to change the atmosphere and my mood along with it so I find them fantastic for stoking up energies.

I have a range of them but one of my favourites is a tiny bell that I got off a Lindt bunny! (Although I had to change the clapper inside to something that made a better noise.) It is such a lovely 'ting, ting' sound that I use it when I want a more fun sound or something light.

And that's what's needed today. You don't need to find a tiny bell necessarily, any one that you've got will do. Even a triangle or something you can hit gently would suffice - as long as the noise it makes is light and pleasing. But I wouldn't be without mine personally!

Seeing as we are with general life-changing spells at the moment, I wanted to focus on your first steps towards change. If you are really lost and daren't make any drastic changes or haven't the courage to do so as yet, this is perfect for you. It will bring about small changes that can turn into larger opportunities if you grab them.

It's a very simple spell also - all you need to do is 'jangle' the bell after each line. Here goes:

Slowly and gently I start to awaken
I close the door on the past
I'm ruffled, uncertain, but my core is not shaken
And change will embrace me at last

I know I am moving
But I know not to where
But I WILL be improving
And my heart will repair

Try this over 3 days if you can as this will help you to build confidence in the words, bring familiarity and help you relax enough to get those small - but oh so significant - changes going.

Move over London Elephants...we've got Cambridge Cows!

London thinks itself pretty cool at the moment because it's got Elephants. Well I  say pah!! Who needs elephants when you've got COWS (below, obviously)! In the meadow! Well, Midsummer Common to be exact. But it is slap bang in the middle of town so it counts as the swinging heart of the city, definitely.

Infinitely more cool I think you'll agree. That said, I'm sure the London elephants don't make a trip to get some milk from the shops a trial of perception skills as you try to avoid the *ahem* bovine ablutions.

Witchcraft should be immune from consumerism

It's not that often that I have a moan (honest). But something has been getting to me more and more recently and I'm worried that it's only going to continue to grow as a problem. I am increasingly unhappy about what I see as the impact of consumerism on our spiritual beliefs and interests. Not necessarily because of what is sold to us as spirituality, but more in the way that the quick fix and the demanding nature of consumerism is twisting the nature of our expectations of others and replacing manners and kindness.

This has affected me in two areas of my life - firstly because people around me know of my beliefs in witchcraft, and secondly because I also do tarot readings. Over the last 7 or 8 years I have watched the way that people talk to me change and go from curiosity and (for the most part) respect to something altogether more demanding and impatient. I am being treated as if I work in the service industry.

This has meant that people feel they can dictate what is 'on offer' and, particularly with my tarot readings, pretty rude when I am unable deliver. Answers are far too often expected immediately without allowing for any energies to build, personal facts about other people expected without a care for their privacy and guarantees of the long term future are demanded of me. With the best will in the world, I cannot change the nature of fate, as most of us have understood it for hundreds of years, and I cannot change the fact they they are responsible for taking control of their own lives!

With witchcraft, I find I am under the same pressure and scrutiny. If I can't turn someone into a frog them I'm not a real witch. No amount of trying to calmly tell them what the true nature of witchcraft is - it's the affect of the 'customer is always right' mentality and people expect to be humoured. To add insult to injury, I don't even charge :)

I would like to say at this point that I take pride in my work and in what I have achieved in my spiritual development. I strive to do my best, to always act honestly and to help whenever I am able. I give 100%. So it is disheartening and upsetting to have people treat you in such a casually derogatory manner.

All the friends that I have with the same or similar beliefs have never failed to impress me with their kindness and lack of judgment of others. I also meet lovely, polite and genuinely interested people who are not spiritual in any way but still value the dignity of others regardless. In reality, I know that I'm moaning about a minority. But I really feel this attitude is on the increase and it is threatening to suppress one of the most beautiful things we all possess - our faiths. Proof, if ever it was needed, that there are some things money can't buy.

If anyone else has encountered something similar, I'd really like to hear from you.

Love, light and blessings to you!

Fran xx

Free Spells - General Life-Changing Spells part 3 (Universal Powers!)

The Power of all the Universal Elements

Seeing as we are looking at general life-changing spells at the moment, and this can be all encompassing in terms of what you want changed, I have written a spell that draws on the energies of all of the divine spirits, or universal elements (depending on what you want to call them).

The purpose of doing so is to garner the energies from all sources and of all characteristics. It will then be more likely that they will bring you a variety of changes of different shades and flavours, leaving you with many paths to choose from.

You need to represent the 5 elements, so will need:

Fire - a candle
Earth - sea salt
Spirit - something personal to you, such as a piece of jewellery or a photo

Place these items in a circle on the floor so that you are able to sit in the middle of them. You need to spend some time meditating so that you are in tune with these different and unique energies - you should try to pick up on how they all feel to you. This will be important in recognising what energies come through to you as you work.

Say the following 3 times:

Spirits of the Divine
Virtues combine
Your perfect design
Will teach me

Now spend at least 20 minutes meditating and paying particular attention to any one type of thought, energy or emotion that comes to you. If you feel there is one, very strong sense, jot it down in your book of shadows. You will now have some ideas on what areas you need to focus on.

Free Spells - General Life-Changing Spells part 2

If you read yesterday's blog, you'll be aware that I recommended opening yourself up to your inner voice first to show you the direction that your life should be heading in. If you know anyway, or have already done the preparation, here's a simple life-changing spell to get the process started!

This is about building up the energies to unleash the real/true you and to get you moving forwards if you are feeling stuck.

All you need is a mirror and something to mark a representation of a path for the reflection - so candles or a selection of crystals. Arrange them in a V shaped so that when reflected, it looks like the path is heading away from you. So basically, the tip of the V should be closest to you. At this point, place something that represents the area of change you feel you want to encourage. It could be a coin for money or a heart for love. If you don't have only the one thing you you want to change, or you are still not sure what you want to happen, that's fine, just work with the path shape you have created.

Stand or sit in front of your display and look into the mirror. Say:

At this time I am standing
In my current place
But my path of understanding
Means change I embrace

Lightness and dark
The joy and the pain
Without fear, I embark
On a new life of gain

To start my transition
I eliminate blocks
By my own volition
My secret unlocks

More tomorrow!

Free spells - General Life-Changing Spells part 1

Often when we want general changes in our lives, it’s because something is blocking us from moving forwards. It feels like whatever we do, we can’t seem to make a difference. This may genuinely be because you’ve had nothing but bad luck - it can happen! But more often, there are changes you need to make in your thinking and outlook. It’s all too easy to fall into patterns of behaviour that do you no good at all. Being able to spot when you are doing this though, is incredibly difficult. So my first general life change spell isn’t actually a spell. It’s about opening up the mind in preparation so that you can see where you might be locking your life and feelings in place and controlling yourself in a destructive way. Here are some of the things I like to do:

  • Do something differently just before you start your thinking. It doesn’t have to be anything major - a cup of tea when you normally have coffee or drive or walk home from work a different way. This will subtly change energies around you just enough for you to utilise them.
  • I use some incense from my website to burn - Uranus Incense. I like it because of the astrological properties of Uranus: strength, independence and innovation. This encourages you to find all you need to start thinking differently and ‘out of the box’.
  • Meditate. This enables your to find your own answers by way of an inner chat which is so much more powerful than getting them from books or well meaning friends and family! Only you know what you truly want and it will be lurking in your subconscious somewhere.
  • As an addition to meditation, I use either a crystal ball or a scrying bowl but you can also use a large mirror placed down on a table or anything that is reflective. Look for any images, words or concepts that come to you as they will be pointing you in the direction of where you need to focus on first.
  • Pull 3 tarot cards. This is an extremely simple way of isolating the key points. And the simplest answers are often the truest.
More coming tomorrow on what to do to open up energies for change once you know what you want to rectify.

Life Changing Spells - New Series!!

Hello and hope you had a wonderful Beltane!! I very much did and my Beltane ritual went well :) I'm feeling more grounded and balanced already.

Before Beltane though, I put a poll on the blog and asked for preferences in what types of spell you wanted to see and general life changes came out tops. This is totally understandable to me. There are many times in life when you know things aren't right but you're not sure what is actually up. Or everything seems to be going wrong and you're so overwhelmed that you're not sure what on earth your next step should be. Sometimes you just want change but are too tired to work out where you should start. Like I say - I understand!

While spells, witchcraft or magick cannot solve all your problems, the energies and wisdom can certainly be used to bring clarity, strength and get your creative juices flowing so that you can bring about the changes you need. It can act like a good friend and steer you in the right direction while making you feel good about yourself.

So, over the next few days I shall be putting together a series of spells to help you work with these energies and to get you back on track - right where you should be!

Blessings

Completed Beltane Spell - Can't Wait!!

Ok, I have completed my Beltane ritual/spell and am ready to go for tomorrow! Here’s what I’ve come up with - hope you find it useful.

I mentioned earlier in the week that I really like the tradition of lighting the home fires with a flame carried from the Beltane bonfire so I have bought a large candle to light in the afternoon. (I would have lit it in the morning but I’ll be out!) I will then use this to light the candles later when I am ready for my Beltane spell.

On my Beltane altar I have my red and white braided wand, my chalice with a moonstone covered with rose petals (these will be placed side by side according to the spell below), red and white candles and roses that I will get fresh cut in the morning.

I will be starting the actual Beltane ritual with some meditation before my altar so will light my candles. As I mentioned before, my aim is for the balance of feminine and masculine energies within me and to create a feeling of constructive emotions.  I will be focusing on the feelings that I’ve had lately and particularly those that have held me back or weakened me in some way. Then I’ll be seeking to create balance in these situations and looking for where I could have addressed these problems a little better. It’s not just wisdom with hindsight I promise, I intend to bring this balance into future similar situations!

When I feel I  am ready, I will say:

My need is for balance
To keep my path straight
To nurture my talents
And assist in my fate

The God and the Goddess
Placed side by side
Equally, they bless
Their example, my guide

To reach equilibrium
Requires that I listen
To both sides of my being
I am whole, no division

Then, I will take the candles outside (weather permitting of course) where I will enjoy some Cornish honey mead that I friend back for me last week!

Bright Beltane blessings to you, may summer start with joy and happiness!!

Beltane Love Spell for Maria

Maria asked for a Beltane based love spell and I have put something simple together - hope this helps you!

I am basing it on fire, Beltane being a fire festival, and also because this works well with igniting the flame of passion! This can be used in an existing relationship but is very relevant to new love as the Beltane energies lend themselves to new connections, this being a fertility festival too ;)

All you will need is 3 red candles and 3 white candles. Carve your initial into the white candles and the object of your desire's into the red ones. Place them in an crescent shape with the white candles all to the left, the red to the right.

God and Goddess unite at this time
An alliance of love and the truly divine

Light 1 white candle and 1 red, the ones furthest apart.

This spirit of passion blesses us all
We give of our hearts when we hear love's true call

Light the second red and white candles.

Joined by the fire
Joined in our ardour
Joined we rise higher
May our hearts be as one.

Light the final candles and then take a few moments for meditation and to imagine and create the feelings of love you aim for. Then blow out the candles, watching the smoke rise and take your prayers skywards and thank the divine as you do this.

Blessings!
